Test your smoke detectors once a month and regular cleaning by vacuuming or dusting, following the manufacturers instructions.
There are two common types of smoke alarms used for detecting fire alarm:
1. IONIZATION SMOKE DETECTORS
When smoke enters the smoke detector, it distrupts the flow of ions, which disrupts the flow of current between two electrically charged plates and activates the alarm. This type of smoke alarm is generally better at detecting glaming fires. For instance a fire starts in your kitchen waste can from papers and such or a grease fire on your stove. Flaming fires spread quickly and rapidly spreads ingulfing every thing in its path. U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission found that 94% of home fires are flaming fires.
2. PHOTOELECTRIC SMOKE ALARMS.
When smoke enters the smoke detector, light is reflected onto a light sensor triggering the alarm. This type of smoke detector is great at detecting smoldering fire and they sometimes burn for hours before bursting into flames. For instance someone falls asleep and cigarette falls on the bed or couch.
Most homes have the ionization type. To insure complete coverage we recommend installing both types next to each other.
